What is Green IT
"Green IT" refers to the idea that Ministry of Health can and should implement practices that are environmentally friendly. The increased attention to green IT has resulted from a number of factors, including: rising energy costs, increased publicity regarding global warming, and increased legislation. This brief examines the drivers of green IT initiatives and provides case examples of how organizations have made IT more environmentally friendly.

Ministry of Health and Green IT
Ministry of Health plans for implementing Green IT initiatives, through the following practices:
  1. Implement the Electronic Health Record and eliminate patient physical files
  2. Transform the Ministry of Health manual procedures to electronic processes via multiple channels
  3. Usage of emails instead of the paper correspondence, and advise the employee not to print the emails unless it is needed
  4. Electronically archive all documents and patient physical files wherever applicable
  5. Improve utilization of IT equipment
  6. Reduce overall electricity consumption
Example
In July 2010, the Ministry of Health implemented an Electronic Service for Registration and Issuance of Birth Certificate; the service included the following process:
  • Registration of newborn at Maternity Hospital
  • Issuance of Personal ID Number for the newborn electronically
  • Electronic confirmation of Hospital payments
  • Requesting Birth Certificates online
  • Delivery of Birth Certificate by post
The eService for Birth Registration has various impacts and Benefits on the environment as follows:
  • Improve in the process of birth certificate issuance
  • Reduce Administration and paper work for processing birth notifications and issuing birth certificates
  • Reduce the time for validating the information
  • Stop requesting the supporting documents for processing Birth Certificate
