License Types and Requirements

Type of License Qualifications required for granting license
Registered general nurse
  • A degree in general nursing based on academic studies at an accredited university, college or institute for a period of not less than 3 years after completion of high school
  • Minimum of 6 months post-degree clinical experience
  • Passed nurse licensure exam (currently being developed, no exam to date)
Registered specialist nurse
  • A degree in any nursing specialty based on academic studies at an accredited university, college or institute for a period of not less than 1 year, following completion of degree in general nursing
  • Minimum of 6 months post-specialty degree clinical experience
  • Passed nurse licensure exam (currently being developed, no exam to date)
Registered practical nurse
  • A degree from a practical nursing program of at least 18 months based on studies at an institute approved by the Licensure Office, after completion of high school
  • Passed nurse licensure exam (currently being developed, no exam to date)

How to Apply

  • New License

    Here you can learn about the key steps of obtaining a new license for nurses and midwives in Bahrain
    Key steps
    1. Apply for a position as a nurse/midwife in Bahrain and get a job offer
    2. Obtain a work permit from your prospective employer (non-Bahrainis only)
    3. Retrieve an application form from your prospective employer, or the Licensure Office, or download it from the website
    4. Get a medical fitness exam at Al Razy Health Center (Phone (973) 1 725 6888) in order to get a health fitness certificate (for locals only, non-locals should do fitness test upon arrival to Bahrain)
    5. Fill out the application form
    6. Submit the completed application form (excluding verification forms) to the Licensure Office by mail or in person together with the letter from your prospective employer, 2 recent photographs, copy of birth certificate, copy of front pages of passport showing full name and nationality, copy of CPR (if you have one), statutory evidence of any name change, educational and professional certificates, transcript, CV, a copy of registration in the country(s) where you are registered, and a copy of the health fitness certificate issued by Al Razy health center
    7. If you do not already have an application number, receive an application number from the Licensure Office either by phone, email or mail once the above documents have been received
    8. Fill out four verification forms with application number and name. Send one to the council where you are registered, one to the school where you have obtained your nursing degree and two to different previous employers (non-Bahraini graduates only)
    9. Register to take the exam, indicating your application number (currently being developed, no exam to date)
    10. Take the exam (currently being developed, no exam to date)
    11. Once all verification forms have been received in sealed envelopes, the application review committee will review your file and make a recommendation regarding licensure to the nursing profession registrar, who in turn makes on decision on your license (when the exam is in place, your application will be reviewed as soon as verification of registration is complete)
    12. Receive notification that your license has been approved or rejected by the nursing profession registrar from the Licensure Office either by phone, email or mail
    13. If approved, go to the cashier at the Directorate of Finance at the Ministry of Health and pay the license fee
    14. Bring your receipt to the Licensure Office where you can pick up the license


  • Renew License
    Here you can learn about the key steps of renewing your nurse/midwifery license in Bahrain.
    Key steps
    1. Retrieve an application form from your employer, the Licensure Office or download it from the website
    2. Fill out the application form including the list of accredited continuing nursing education (CNE) that you have obtained during the license period
    3. Submit entire application together with reference letter from current or previous employer by mail or in person
    4. Wait for the application review committee to review your file and make a recommendation regarding licensure
    5. Receive notification from the Licensure Office by phone, email or mail that your license renewal has been approved or rejected by the nursing profession registrar
    6. If approved, bring your old license and go to the cashier at the Directorate of Finance at the Ministry of Health and pay for the renewal of license
    7. Bring your receipt together with your old license to the Licensure Office where you can pick up your renewed license

License fees should be paid at the cashier in the Directorate of Finance at the Ministry of Health.
