Q: What is the nature of the genomic research results for adults?
The National Genome Program is a research and population screening program with multiple objectives, ranging from providing personal benefits to participants by analyzing their genomes and informing them about their genetic health status, to achieving broader benefits for the national healthcare system. These include the development of predictive and preventive programs targeting genetic and chronic diseases, and improving the quality of services provided to affected individuals and their families. The genomic test is performed using Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) technology. As part of the research program, participants are informed about their genetic status, including whether they have any disease-causing variants or if they are carriers of autosomal recessive conditions. It is important to note that these research-based results do not replace the need for clinical genetic testing if warranted by the individual's medical condition or family history. -
Q: How can I obtain my genome test result?
You can access your result by visiting the Bahrain Ministry of Health website, selecting the Genome Test Report service, and logging in using your eGovernment Smart Key. Once logged in, you will be able to see whether your result is available for viewing. -
Q: I have questions about my result. Who can assist me?
For any inquiries or clarifications regarding your genome test result, you can contact the National Genome Program Team through: • Phone: 17282240 • Email: genome@health.gov.bh The team will arrange a phone consultation with a specialist to address your questions. -
Q: Someone I know received their result, although they joined the program months after I did. Is there a specific order for releasing results?
The readiness of results is based on random selection rather than sequential order. It also depends on the review of the consent form and the participant’s medical history. Additionally, identifying genetic variants that require medical intervention takes varying amounts of time from one individual to another, regardless of when they joined the program. -
Q: Can I access the results of my family members?
Each individual’s genome result is strictly confidential and cannot be accessed by anyone other than the individual. Adult participants can access their personal results by logging in using their Government eKey via the dedicated online service on the Bahrain Ministry of Health website.
